Eye on the Weather
Looking across a dry landscape, he wonders if some of that wet stuff they call rain will ever return.
I wanted to express a dry and arid environment, without actually showing anything of the surrounding landscape. I decided to use the sun as a back light, while lighting the farmer from the front. I shot low from about 1.5 metres from the subject and my light about 2.5metres high, and to the right a metre also, directly opposite the position of the low Winter sun.
Of coarse, looking into the sun is going to demand a fairly small aperture while staying at the 1/200th sec max sync speed of the 5D, it resulted in a f/22 @ ISO100 and 304 Watt seconds of power from the strobe….....I think that is almost equivalent to 6 speedlites. I tried this type of shot with my 550EX and I had to have it about 2 feet from the subjects face at full juice.

nice bit of rim lighting from the sun on this Pete, plenty of detail in the shaded areas to, so the strobe is doing its job well
Peter Marin replied
Thanks John, was pretty easy to kick the suns butt like this.
Hans Kawitzki

Just amazing how much power you get peter out of your strobes for a shot like this…. really well mastered.!!
Peter Marin replied
Yes, I was amazed too. And once I get some decent parabolic reflectors to match it should be even more efficient. As is I reckon I could get f/32 from 2 metres at full 400Ws, no probs.
Cheers mate.

This is bloody brilliant! The angle, the lighting, it really does have a great Aussie feel to it! This would make a fantastic stock library photo…thanks for the details.

Wow, thanks very much for that, means a lot. My intention was for a strong Aussie feel to the image, the hat was my first inclusion, followed by positioning him in front of the sun like that.
Thanks again for you wonderful comment.
