PITT SPRING, May 2012 - IT'S ALIVE! by

This beautiful spring and surrounding woodland, has been loved back to life by the Northwest Florida Water Management District. 3 or 4 years ago, I was going to do an article on the spring and met with Bill Cleckley on a hot summer morning. He showed me what people over the years had done to the natural vegetation and to the spring itself, and the coming plans to renovate it. The spring at that time was literally dying. By the time it was closed to the public, the pool was stagnant and the spring so plugged, many of us thought it was permanently damaged or dead.

It opened with a new look on Saturday. This was finally an example of taxpayer dollars put to good use. It couldn’t be nicer. So much thought went into this – even down to the countersunk screws in the boardwalks and the rounded, sanded edges of the wood used as handrails. It is an exceptional renovation and improvement on what I thought couldn’t be improved.

All the plantings are native to the area and the limestone boulders, placed strategically, are from under our feet and full of fossils.
