Artist's Description

Bayou George, FL

The other night I opened the back door to let the dogs out. Maya, the German Shepherd barked to let the night visitors know she was about to patrol. I felt funny about the way she barked, ran the few feet to the corner of the house and she was standing there with a dead baby possum in her mouth. She dropped it. I picked it up (it was “dead”), and saw no toothmarks, no blood. I grabbed an old serape that was folded on trailer rack and gently put it around the dead baby and put it over the little fence under the bedroom window in the plants.

Baby came to life. Oh, how I didn’t want a repeat of Pogo and his demise from last year! March, in fact.

It crawled up the folds and looked no worse for wear. When I was sure all the dogs were in, I took its picture. A little while later it had disappeared. So I’m pretty sure it went back to eating or to its den, wherever that is.

Whew! I’ll be keeping the dogs in until I make a lot of noise every night in the dark for a month.
