Untouched color, taken in March, 2010. The coots congregated on the canal across the street for protection from the cold in great numbers. This year, it was very cold (for here) for prolonged periods and I only saw a handful. I do know the hunters were out in force, and these are legal to take, but for what reason, I don’t know. They are small birds in an abundant coat of feathers and weigh only ounces. They eat vegetation and would taste muddy.

I found one this winter in my neighbor’s yard. It had been shot and wounded just once by a pellet, but it was dead.

I’m sorry, little one.

Taken with my Sony W50, Bayou George, FL.
