Walked over to the creek, watched and waited. Movement in the cattails, in a little pocket that’s exposed now that the dam’s been open. A blue heron, and a more secretive white heron fishing. The white heron disappears silent as a ghost into the cattails, the other moves just within eyesight.
I waited – stood on the first rung of the railing and hoped to see them more clearly. I stayed there for a bit, hoping I wouldn’t fall.
The white comes back into view in the little pocket. I phish, I click, I clack. I whistle. I climb down, it watches me and stretches its neck for a better look. I flap my arms. Once, twice, three’s a charm. It lifts, I snap.
