Young female turtle I found on the roadside last evening. I’ve taken many back to the water but this was an almost perfect example of one who has never had an altercation with vehicle, dog or gator. Her plastron and carapace were unblemished, she had only two spots along the edge of her plastron and she was a beauty, too far from the water to make it safely across the road. I would say she was up searching for a nest site for the first year.
Water turtles don’t have “rings” on the scutes (like rings on a tree and tortoises), so I can’t be sure of the age. As turtles go, she was Miss Florida.
