Armed settlers drove a passing band of Crow (I think) up this butte in the middle of a vast coulee. It grew dark and the settlers decided to leave the fray for morning.
But in the morning, the Indians had vanished leaving no trace.
The immensity of this place, the terminal moraine where a glacier stopped moving and died, is humbling.
This butte, all by itself in the midst of this grassland, stands like the Sphinx. All golden.
