Faded Beauty by May Lattanzio

An end-of-summer Eastern Swallowtail.

There has been an alarming dearth of butterflies in this part of Florida this year. These important pollinators, the butterflies and moths are simply not here. August is their month. There were none. September came. There are no flowers. The all-important Bidens alba, a common roadside plant has been mowed ruthlessly by the county. It is probably the most important plant to these insects, bees, wasps, aphids. The butterfly migrations, aren’t The Monarchs are non-existent. The Gulf Fritillaries are not here either. The Common Sulphurs, so absolutely dependable, I could count daily on one hand.

There were once so many, that at 10:00 a.m. I would walk outside and watch them come around the circle from the north and nectar in anything that was blooming. Once in the wild morning glories, there were so many, I stood in awe because I heard them “clapping” their wings.

Bay County also has an aggressive mosquito spraying program.

While the bees and butterflies (our pollinators) suffer, we don’t realize we will reap the devastation of their loss.

I am so very sorry to hear of the short sightedness of your council. We destroy insects at our peril. Read “Dust” by Charles Pellegrino and despair…

oh jeeze…i was just going to say read the book also! Dust is basically about the death first of the tiniest of life…then the insects…and finally the larger species………
it tells of people stepping outside..and not being able to hear the buzz of the insects…of how our world would die in ‘this’ amount of time without our pollonizers…
a sad world it would truly be!

What a sad, but all too familiar, story.
