Artist's Description

Late summer, northwest Florida (Bayou George). This species has extraordinary long antennae when they reach adulthood and lovely lavender eyes.

Pictured here on pickerel weed. Pickerel weed, an aquatic plant, grows at the fringes of slow moving creeks and ponds here in the Florida panhandle and can easily adapt to home water or bog gardening.

Family: Pontederiaceae
Genus: Pontederia
Species: cordata

Height:
36-48 in. (90-120 cm)

Hardy from zones 3a to 9b in full sun (though this is partially shaded).

Seeds are poisonous if eaten. Pollen may cause allergic reaction. Blooms from late spring almost until frost in my area of northern Florida. Dies back in winter.

Propagate by dividing rootballs, and collecting and drying seeds and sowing as soon as possible. Seeds have fleshy coating which must be removed before storing, and must be fermented before sowing. Protect hands when handling seeds.
