My Florida fungi expert wasn’t quite sure what this was, but he felt it had been attacked by a fungus.

Whatever it was – it recalled all those old 40s movies where zombies rose from the grave..

    haha…i remember all those old late 60’s and 70’s zombie movies…lol
    I have to agree with u’r expert? it does resemble a ‘fungi attack’……..often I find local varieties that have this look….one of the culinary fav’s is the Lobster Mushroom which is actually a parasitic fungi ON a mushroom……..and it likes several varieties so one has to be careful when they decide to ‘try’ it
