I fell in love with her 2

I wake up to a sunrise impression
Looking down at this body I once knew
My eyes glide over an unfamiliar inspection
I remember the one that used to drink and make love
In the open air without protection
Had it’s heart broken and made mistakes most don’t
Just to learn some of life’s lessons
And from that detriment
I came away still looking at life as a blessing
Now I’m standing in front of someone I don’t know
And I can’t seem to recognize my reflection
Because that youthful innocence
Has been replaced with this impediment
A regiment of Tamoxifen and Herceptin
A cancerous disease with an unforgiving sentiment
I try to leave my mind and thoughts
Not thinking about how it made this temple a tenement

Instead
I wonder if my mother knew the power of the love she gave me
It’s the only example in this world I have of perfection
I wonder if my father still loves me as the day I was born
…And I wonder if they felt love at the moment my conception

Life is elegant
When you are living to die
There is no question
The same rules still apply
Without exception
There are moments of reflection
Of creeping depression
And moments when you realize
The power of human connection
When you think about life and its flaws
And breathe in your imperfections
When you think of death and its law
And accept that it’s our final direction
When you look back and see new life in awe
As the memories fade from your recollection

. . . . .

I don’t look at her the same
She feels all I see are cells that show aggression
Maybe it eases the pain of loss
But shes never been oncogenes and over-expressions
I calm by saying these pharms
Starve malignancies into suppression
And marvel at how far we’ve come
At producing such regressions
But we’re left not knowing and forever guessing
At the mysteries of life and those questions…
Will we pay the price for our transgressions
And is there really any value in our confessions?

As above, so below – I still believe our minds are our greatest weapon
Because loving with an open heart will always render us defenseless
But even cancer could never stop me from feeling her essence
And mirrors are just reflections of the shells that suffer senescence
And in disease I’ve found what it means to love despite oppression
So before our ascensions…

Love like art and let the world see your impressions

I fell in love with her 2

HER2 – a form of breast cancer; HER2 or Human Epidermal growth factor Receptor 2 overexpression (of the her2 protein) is responsible for 20-25 % of breast cancers, which are more aggressive and less responsive to hormonal treatments

tamoxifen and herceptin (trastuzumab) are breast cancer drugs

“senescence” – biological (genetic) aging

“sunrise impression” (line 1) refers to the painting “impression sunrise” by claude monet, which is one of the original and defining works of impressionism.

“in the open air” or “en plein air” (line 5) refers to the act of painting outdoors – an important technique by impressionists to capture natural light

the impressionists were first ridiculed and publicly harassed for their work and yet today we view it as beautiful art – the metaphor here is that something originally seen as a negative can be viewed as something beautiful when looked at in another light… imminent death can put Iife itself in a whole new perspective

“as above so below” – ancient hermetic reference from the emerald tablet … meaning, man is the microcosm of the Universe … the heavens are reflected on earth
