if my poems could fly

I wrote my first poem on a paper airplane
Because I had no idea how else to give it wings
I was once to afraid to share them with others
Part of the anxiety that the fear of failure brings
It was heartbreak that gave me the courage to share
I heard others say you need to release these things
But I always felt that poetry was a way to feel understood
Because after being burnt I still felt I had a voice that sings
And when I did it was the kindness of others and support
That encouraged me to write on after all those stings

I wrote another poem on a paper airplane
And threw it into an ocean of despair
This poem was my voice and my heart in words
So it flew to be heard by anyone who cared
Yes, sometimes I want them to reach the whole world
Yet as I get older I feel the joy when someone is thankful that I shared
And I’ve come to see that that we all write poems that can fly
Not because of what they achieve, but because we simply dared

So I’m writing this poem on a paper airplane
And thank everyone who catches it and passes it on
Simply write your name on my plane
And throw it to someone else who might not feel so strong
Because I have thousands of your poems in my hands
And they’ve given me the strength to float on
Then fold me in your hearts and throw me towards the stars
Because every night after this we’ll wake up to a different dawn

So I write are all my poems on paper airplanes because if my poems could fly…
They’ll travel the universe and make it into hearts that will live on after I die

WHY? Shoaib, you write so beautifully with such heart, such honesty. Your opening lines here totally captured my heart! Our styles are so different – true for each one of us who has found their own voice here among so many talented people – but that is what makes RB so special. It won’t be the same without your contributions!
