Kirra Beach – Gold Coast – Queensland – Australia

In 2001 they started the Tweed River sand Bypass Project. Within 2 years the groynes that stood several meters tall and provided some of the best breaks on the Gold Coast were completely covered in sand. With that much sand shifting to one of the worlds most famous breaks, frustratingly Kirra would become and still is to this day, no more.
The position i sat in to take this shot would have been covered in water in it’s day.
There have been many protests and meetings to return Kirra to the surfers and the good old days of world renowned surf. Several key figure heads in world surfing, including Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew and Michael “MP” Peterson were instrumental in the push and eventually obtaining an agreement with the QLD state government to restore the local break. Unfortunately it was leaked last week that the powers that be, will no longer pursue a resolution to the sand issue at Kirra.

Sure …… Kirra looks beautiful as it is now, but the Gold Coast has dozens of beautiful beaches. Kirra needs to stand as the legendary break that it once was, return it to the surfers ………….

What’s the point in needing a cut lunch and shoes to walk that far out to the water? Agreed that the beach needs to be given back. I have rellies who are in their 80’s though, who swear that a few good cyclones will clear that sand away in no time….

  • lol …….. completely agree with you about needing a cut lunch Mel. Your rellies would have seen so much change in Kirra, especially the Point. They are right, a cyclone or 2 will fix most of the sand issues. According to tonights weather forecasters we could actually see that this summer. Thank you very much for your comment Mel :-)

What an awesomr shot !….Love it xx
Great info too – Most of the locals agree that Kirra should be returned to the surfers …

  • Thank you very much Gail for your kind words. Glad you had a read of the info, hopefully it will one day be restored to it’s best. Not only will Kirra benefit for the change, but a flow on effect will benefit right through Bilinga to Currumbin Alley. Anyhow ….. that’s my little rant ……. lol. Cheers Gail :-)

I agree wholeheartedly, Maxwell !!! I fondly remember one of my best rides & experiences was at the Kirra Groin break riding back deep in one of those long tubes on a a glass bottom spoon kneeboard many many years ago. BTW, a fabulous pano image !!

  • So many people will have great memories like that Phil. It was such an iconic break. People used to fly from all over when Kirra was working. Thanks for sharing that memory mate, and cheers for the compliment also :-)
