The iconic Church of the Good Shepherd is situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo amongst the natural beauty of the lake and mountains.
The Church was built in 1935 as a place of worship and a as a memorial for the pioneer families of the Mackenzie country. The builders of the Church were instructed that the site was to be left undisturbed, and that even the matagouri bushes surrounding the building were to remain. Rocks which happened to be on the wall lines were not to be removed. The stones for the wall were to be procured within a radius of five miles of the site, and were to be unchipped and in their natural condition.

Lake Tekapo is an inspiring landscape. Surrounded by an amazing mountain ranges, which at the time that of our visit was in the early stages of the snow season. My visit to here was inspired by images that i have seen from other photographers, but i will definitely return to Lake Tekapo, now inspired by the town itself, a beautiful part of the world.

Love the composition. It actually provides a lot more info than the shots I took which were typically closer to the church. Makes me want to go back for a third attempt and do something similar.

  • There was another angle that i thought of while i was there, and now wish i had of taken. From the other side of the little inlet, would have probably shown the depth of blue in the water better as well as some more of the fauna surrounding the area. Like you say ……….. makes me want to go back .. unfinished business :-)
