Artist's Description

Lake Tekapo – South Island – New Zealand

Canon 5d MKII – Canon EF L Lens 17-40 mm

Lake Tekapo is a town located in the South Island of New Zealand. It is a beautiful place in it’s own right, but it’s the night sky that is the main attraction here. It’s the best place in the Southern Hemisphere to view the Milky Way. The significance of Lake Tekapo’s pristine night sky without light pollution is recognised world-wide and has been included in the list of UNESCO Starlight Reserves. The township and the community surrounding Lake Tekapo restrict the amount of lighting they use outdoors in an effort to control light pollution. Any outdoor lighting that is used , is to be projected downwards or at least across the ground, rather than pointing skywards. In fact, outside lighting is band between the hours of 11pm and sunrise.
All this effort from the locals, makes this incredible sky feel as though it is falling in around you as you stand there and admire it. Being there was so surreal, and a real breath taking experience. I was incredibly lucky to get a clear night, as it was to be the only night we were there. I wanted the clearest of skies for this shoot, and was hoping for the clouds to roll in for the morning shoot. As you can see off to the right, the clouds were beginning to roll in. When we awoke in the morning, we were given excactly what we were after……..sometimes you get lucky.

Hope you like this image, i love it……. and loved the experience of capturing it. Despite it being minus 4 degrees :-)

If this is something that interests you, then i strongly reccommend heading over there to check it out. NZ South island is unbelievably stunning.
