Detail from a stained glass window of Altenberg Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery in Altenberg which was founded in 1133 as a daughter house of Morimond Abbey and settled initially in the old castle of the Counts of Berg, Burg Berge, which the counts had left for Schloss Burg, but moved to the new purpose-built monastery in the valley of the Dhünn in 1153.
I loved those most unusual unicorns here – unfortunately I don’t know from when the window dates, but the unicorn was not widely used in early heraldry, it became popular from the 15th century.
In heraldry, silver or white (argent) stands for peace and sincerity, red (gules) for a warrior or martyr, military strength and magnanimity. The unicorn symbolizes extreme courage, virtue and strength.
