Deep in the heart of Merry Grounds Wood on the outskirts Fairfieldshire, you might come across the unmistakable circuitous tracks of the rare Carrousel Horse. Ever a creature of habit, you just have to sit and wait for them to come thundering around again.
These once common, beautiful animals were hunted to near extinction by late 19th century funfair owners to supply the burgeoning Victorian pleasure industries.
Thankfully, the Carrousel Horse now enjoys a protected status (along with the the Tumble Bug and Eyerly Octopus) in the UK. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to intentionally kill, injure, sell or attach them to a pole.
