Im interested to know how many fire urchins you need to scope out before you find one with the shrimp? I wish I had known about this symbiotic relationship before I visited Indonesia.
MattTworkowski replied
I found them on at least half the fire urchins I looked at although the dive guide said they were only out between about 10am & 2pm for some reason.I did notice diving outside of these times they were not visible so I guess he was right

Stephen – at one of our dive sites here in Anilao – there are all over the place during January. However, fire urchins are very nasty. they will come towards you from a distance and prick you if they can. One thing very unusual about our Coleman Shrimps the bigger female is always perched on the left and the smaller male on the right. Matt’s shot is in reserves which is very interesting.

Brilliant Matt, do you study up on all these little critters prior to a dive so you know where to look or have you just been out so many times now that you know them by heart??
