A valiant thorn no longer spikes and spears
A black veiled rose has rained upon his heart
Thorn softened by devouring all her tears
Rose hardened when her world was torn apart

When love’s goddess is hardened is there hope
Can flesh regrow upon a soulless bone?
Can softened thorn do more than simply grope?
Is it too much to want for things unknown?

Can god of endless power love for real?
Announcing in the valley of the Queens
Intent on just her precious heart to steal
He likes to think he knows now what love means

If Romeo and Juliet should live
What greater gift to lovers could one give?

A sonnet seemed suitable to fit the bill :-)

Wonderful indeed Matt, love the theme and the strong images in my mind as I read this, thorns, heartache, valley, hope, love. Great.

  • Thank you so much Don, It’s great to know that those images came through :-)

When you take up a double dare you don’t muck around.

sigh Matt this is the perfect romantic response.

And indeed what greater gift. x

  • Thank you Lisa, so glad it hit the mark, it’s entirely fed by your words.
Yep, nothing like attempting to rewrite tragedy :-) x

Beautiful response to an equally beautiful poem….afraid it has to get down to looks, no matter how superficial that may sound.

  • Thanks Cos, such kind words. I’m not sure if it really has to get down to looks entirely, but to some extent that will happen…
