WOMEN
This was prompted by a “men only” contest held by the group Sisterhood the brief was for prose or a poem “women and why I love them” This is by no means the whole story :-)
WOMEN belongs to the following groups:
All Things Poetic, Artistic, Philosophical and Core [C.O.R.E]From the Mother who bore me to the women who tore me
Variety goes with their kind
And it brings spice to life some would make them a wife
Though love I believe makes them blind
The sisters that grew up beside me
Who tested my strength and restraint
Gave me varied perceptions of woman
Some think they’re the same but they ain’t
For each is another exception
If you think they’ll fit into a rule
You’re asking for trouble believe me
That thinking will make you the fool
From the girls at the dances in youth
Those desirable and sweet little misses
I still feel the warmth and awakening
Of the cuddles and first slippery kisses
And throughout that growth into manhood
The company of females was fraught
With the longing and hope and desire
But the fear I’d do wrong and be caught.
The fear was oppressed by the passion
A woman can knock down your guard
At times you’re unscathed and you’re happy
Sometimes you can land pretty hard
But that’s all just part of the contract
You make with yourself in this life
You can’t taste the best thing on offer
Without risking trouble and strife
So I led with my chin and I fell pretty hard
But I got to my feet to be sure
With two little girls to look after
You can’t remain down on the floor
Time then to stop treading water
Not to drown I just had to keep swimmin’
And relish the chance to do what I could
And bring up a couple of women
So I walked in the shoes of a single mum
Which were awkward and tight for a man
But the women around me helped me along
Like an honorary one of their clan
I suppose it was going to happen
Preordained if you like, I don’t know
I’m more likely to relate to a woman
Than a man who’s emotions don’t show
I stuck by the girls and allowed them to grow
While women they came and they went
As time ticked away I can honestly say
Life is blessed when you love with intent
Each new love has taught me some more
And I’ve learnt from most women I’ve known
In friendship and lust and love in its turn
They have warmed me or cut to the bone
While the cuts always heal if you value your time
And the love’s a bold venture it’s true
The friendship of women is as good as the love
And you know they’ll be there just for you
They say “oh he just loves women”
Though I feel like an old Peter Pan
When I look back I see it so clearly
It’s the women who’ve made me this man.

You’ve made me feel glad to be a woman….xxx Wonderful writing…
Perfect timing as I was thinking of prostrating myself on my floor of blood and fears and taking a vow of heart silence….
Matt Penfold replied
Thank you so much Lisa, what a really beautiful thing to say. X
I sure hope you don’t take a vow of heart silence, what you share from your heart warms the cockles of many others and inspires deeper thought. You really are a bright light.

Love what you’ve written here Matt! Strangely enough, it’s men who’ve made me a woman….isn’t nature wonderful :)
Matt Penfold replied
Yep nature sure is wonderful, it may be strange or it may be just perfect chaos. ;-) Thanks so much Mel really appreciated.

I adore the story telling you have woven in this…... and your honesty that shines. This is a really heartfelt and gracious tribute to the women you speak of and how you have owned the journey as well. Writing that comes from life experience can be difficult to convey …...you have really given this life. I would imagine that the women in your world love you very much. XX
Matt Penfold replied
Wow KarenSue, you’re making me blush, I’m not often lost for words but you’ve got me here. Gee you write a good comment and you certainly know how to make a bloke feel good :-) X

Barbara Cliff
A lovely poem Matt, so much empathy and caring without losing masculinity—it can happen! Oh and poetic as well – Good on you, Barbara
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks for that Barbara, I’m certainly happy being a bloke, a bit of caring and empathy aren’t a threat to masculinity, as more and more men are finding out these days.
Sally Omar
This is an absolutely amazing piece!!!!! xoxoxoxoxo

I think even perfect chaos has some sort of logical pattern….it must do, or I’d just go absolutely gaga, since chaos and me are pretty well aquainted…..luckily for me the men in my life have the logic…I am the chaos they try to contain…..
on a different note, I see only women have responded. You’ve melted some hearts here….and no doubt the guys will be jealous….or they’ll kick your dunny door down…..so good luck :)
Matt Penfold replied
Don’t worry Mel, there’s still plenty of time for you to go absolutely gaga LOL
That’s an interesting observation you make, I’d rather just kid myself into thinking no men have seen this yet. But I will keep an eye on the portal of the crapper ;-)
Mel Brackstone
head in the sand approach always worked for me, LOL
Mel Brackstone
acutally, you’re dunny-door-kicking type probably wouldn’t read that many words….so I suspect you’re safe anyway….ha!!!
Matt Penfold replied
LOL
