Remember Velvia?

For some time now I’ve been besotted by Mel Brackstone’s SS Dicky images. She generously shares much information about how she gets such remarkable images, like this for example
I finally bought some NDgrad filters and this and my previous image are my first attempts to use them to capture the movement of the ocean, I have much to learn. Thanks for the inspiration and advice Mel.

I processed this using a script-fu plug-in for Gimp which attempts to mimic the Fuji Velvia slide film that I used to love so much in the days before digital.

Canon 450D ISO100 F5.6 1s f18mm (Cokin 121s ND Grad)

WOW!!! These are fantastic shots!!! Can I ask what lense you used?

Hi Rebecca, thanks. That lens is the standard Canon 18-55mm IS kit lens that comes with the 450D, shot at 18mm.
(Equivalent to 27mm lens on a full frame 35mm camera)

LOL, they got pretty wet, on the other shot the water came up over my knees and I had to grab the tripod to stop it getting knocked over!
My phone was in the pocket of my shorts but it still works (for now anyway)

This is an absolute corker Matt. I love the strong flowing fast streams of water escaping from the pool as fast as it can in all directions and the lighting on the rails and posts is criminally good. Throw in that splashing wave hitting the first wall and you’re just showing off now!

I recently bought a medium format film camera and have started shooting with Velvia, but haven’t produced anything that looks remotely as good as this. Great shot, and I thank you for the links!

Thanks Naomi, that’s lovely to hear coming from a real expert. Yep I picked up a nice heavy sturdy tripod in a lifeline shop for fifteen bucks, it sure helps to have some weight in it :-)
