Gotta get up early
Once again the sunrise was disappointing. Not wanting to waste the 5:30 AM start, I tried to find a good composition using these rocks and the headland, for when I get some ND filters and the surf gets up. I welcome any comments and constructive criticism.

Thanks Kathy, much appreciated :o)
Diane Schuster
Beautiful light and water action, I like the composition too! Dee
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks Dol, I like the composition too and it’s good to know how other people see it. I see so many fantastic seascapes on the bubble that I find it hard to know just what makes one image “work” and another look not :o)
Cheryl Lunde
Stunning action shot!
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks so much Cheryl, I see you have some lovely ocean action shots too :o)

The rocks and water movement look beautiful Matt. This will be a brilliant place to shoot when you have those filters and get the right sunset. Love the light on the beach and the rocks as well. We have a stormy sky today, im hoping it stays around till this evening… im chasing a decent sunset :o)
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks Danielle, it is a really beautiful spot, only about ten minutes drive from home.I dont think the sunset will be much good though, It always sets on the land here LOL I have to get up early to shoot colour on the ocean. I hope the weather holds out for you :O)
Ralph Olsson
Just wondeful work as usual Matt:)

Really nice…..the beach looks a good walking spot too.
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks KarenSue, It’s a great walking spot though the beach is fairly short, at low tide you can walk around the rocks to the next beach north (Warriwood) or south (Narrabeen) :>)

This is what you have to do until you get those filters, cut the sky out, or try a polariser. You’ve caught the water nicely, and the detail in the cliffs at the back is gorgeous with the low light. If it’s nice and cloudy you could probably include some sky too…..it’s good practice until you get some ND’s
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks Mel, I always appreciate your encouragement and advice :-)
Ginger Barritt
My GOSH this is gorgeous!!!!!

I like the way you have captured the water and the contrast between the sunlight and shadows works nicely. I think framing this shot with very little sky was the way to go. Very nice image.
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks Patrick, I appreciate the feedback, I was really forced into having very little sky because I wanted the slow shutter speed but had no ND filter, I stopped it down to F25 and still could only get down to 1/3 sec. :-)
Antanas
wonderful work, amazing view
Matt Penfold replied

Oh wait a minute, wait just a minute…..How could there be any criticism for this piece…for it is absolutely beautiful. I love the depths of the blue tone mingled with the lighter tones of blue…the splash gives it energy and the light welcomes all of us that views this master piece….Well done! I would love to be there to hear the beautiful song she sings.
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks sleepy, I appreciate your kind words. this photo was selected for the photography 101 group critique and I got some valuable input, I agree with you about the splash, though some prefer a fast shutter to freeze the action. It really is a beautiful spot.

I love the light at this time of day :)
Matt Penfold replied
So do I Tots, though sometimes its hard to boot myself out of bed early enough ;-)

Absolutely beautiful work…Matt !!!
Matt Penfold replied
Thank you for that Ellen, thanks for looking at my work, I do appreciate it.

Even though you were disapoointed by the non-performing sunrise (why won’t nature behave!!) this is beautiful. You have caught the light glinting on the rocks in the foreground, and the way these rocks encircle the incoming water makes an excellent composition. Definitely a spot to go back to.
Matt Penfold replied
Thank you for this really lovely comment, I do appreciate it. Sorry it’s taken so long to reply :-)
Rosina Lamberti

wouldja just look at the difference between this and the pool shot you’ve posted….grads just open up a whole new world, don’t they?
Matt Penfold replied
They sure do Mel, it really offers a profound difference in what’s worth attempting and makes it so much more flexible. Are you having fun with that 9 stop filter yet?
simonesphotos
Lovely light Matt, love the movement also!
Matt Penfold replied
Thanks Simone, your comments are very much appreciated :-)
Mel Brackstone
I’m about to give it a good workout, got three shoots lined up for this week, all of them dawn :)
Matt Penfold replied
I can’t wait Mel, I’m sure you’ll be offering a visual treat :-)
Mel Brackstone
ya think? :D
Matt Penfold replied
If you get out of bed early enough, anyway I’m hoping!
Then again with 9 stops you could still be shooting at 10AM at F16 and getting one second exposures or longer …......... maybe :-)
Mel Brackstone
Indeed, since I’ll be taking some classes for shoots, then we WILL still be out there at 10am. Exactly why I will be attempting to use the Hoya 400…prolly add a polariser, and/or some Lee ND filters, depending on how bright that sun is….I’m excited :)
Matt Penfold replied
I hope you have fun with it Mel, it’s always exciting to try out the new toys :-)

Dear Matt – you have some wonderful water shots – I love this one and Nasty Storm in particular.
