A Final 2009 Message From The Chimp

The above t-shirt is now up to 2912 views and today had 2 more sales, bringing its tally to 48 sales! I’m constantly thrilled at the love this illustration continues to receive and thank every single person who has purchased a shirt, featured the image, favourited and commented on it.

I hope you all have a wonderful new year full of love, laughter, and monkeys.

Because we all know that everything’s more fun with monkeys :-)

Feature Thanks!

Big thanks to the following groups for featuring the following pieces over the last week and a bit :-)

Thanks again folks. Features are always a blast, especially as they tend to result in people checking out my stuff who otherwise might not stumble across it :-)

How long can you go........

…….without creating something before you start to lose your mind?…

We’ve had my parents staying with us since Xmas Eve and as a result I haven’t had the space or time to get any drawing done since they arrived. It’s the longest break I’ve had from creating anything for YEARS and it’s starting to take its toll. Art is such a giant part of my life (I spend anywhere between 10 – 16 hours a day in the studio) that to live a few days without it is quite difficult. We had an early start to the day though today, so hopefully they’ll crash out early tonight and I can get some drawing done ;-)

I’ve got a stack of messages and other things I need to catch up on as well, so for anyone waiting on responses to things I apologise for the delay and hope to get back into the full swing of things by the

Merry Xmas Folks!

I hope you all have a fantastic time over the Xmas season doing whatever it is you choose to do. I’ve met some wonderful people/artists since joining RB, and I look forward to hanging out with you all even more in 2010.

Take care

Time's Slipping Away

I’ve had my head down for most of the week working on my upcoming exhibition so haven’t been around as much on RB as I usually am. Got a bunch of Bubblemail I need to reply to and also need to catch up on the new work that everyone’s been posting. I’ve also got a bunch of new shirt designs on the go but there just aren’t enough hours in the day at the moment.

Here’s another flyer for the show…..

Matt :-)!

T-Shirt Thanks!

Big thanks to the shoppers who decided to give the below t-shirts new homes today.

I was particularly excited to see the Leroy t-shirt get picked up as he’s without question my favourite personal creation…………probably quite obvious considering how often he appears in my work :-)

Bubblers that make me smile

Thought I’d take a break from talkin’ up my own shit all the time by sharing a few of my own personal favourite pieces from some fellow artists here on RB. This entry is dedicated to a bunch of different t-shirt designs that always make me grin :-)

Hope they made you grin as well.

I’m working on the next page of LM2 as I type this, should be ready to upload in an hour so.

And on a completely unrelated note, we went and saw Where The Wild Things Are at the drive-in last night. Loved every second of it and even cried a little! It’s a truly beautiful film.

Guest Blogging

Next week I’ll be a guest blogger over at the Overland Literary Journal

I’ll be giving a brief rundown of the creative process that went into designing the below image for them (which was one of a bunch of images I produced for a recent copy of the Journal).

It’s all part of the subscription drive (and if you subscribe you can go into the running to win a series of limited/signed prints by yours truly).

I don’t know about you, but there’s a part of me that gets a cheeky thrill out of a comic-obsessed artist like myself being a regular contributor to a Literary Journal (I want to send copies to everyone in my life that ever said “You’re wasting your time with comics you know!” hehe).

Matt :-)

Zazzle Skateboard!

So after a few nudges from a few people I finally set up over at ZAZZLE

The main reason being so I could start putting out skateboards :-)

I’ll be putting a few other things up there as well, but RB will continue to be my main home.

Thanks From Monkeyville

This ever-lovin’ chimp is nearing its 2500th viewing and just had its 35th t-shirt sale…

It still makes me smile that an image I did purely for my own kicks continues to be one of my most popular creations.

Matt :-)

I’d like to say thanks to the Cityscapes and City Skylines Group for featuring the above image as it directed a lot of people through to my gallery who I don’t think would normally have checked my stuff out :-)

Features For The Week

It’s been a pretty busy week this week and I just wanted to thank the following groups for featuring my work :-)

GRINDHOUSE (A GO-GO) and the Melbourne & Victoria Group featured….

with the Grindhouse gang also featuring….

The Cityscapes and City Skylines Group chose….

The Eat Sleep Draw brigade went with this LM2 webcomic promo….

And this pretty lady was picked by the WTF Are You Wearing? team….

Thanks again to everyone involved in those groups and for the other great people floating around on RB who are always commenting and mailing me about my art.

LM2 - PAGE01 (rebooted)

So after having a couple of days away from this page I decided to strip it back and rebuild it from scratch. The textures and colours in the original page were a bit too murky, which in turn threw off the pacing of the layouts/etc/etc. I was originally going to just rework the colours, but then came up with a different layout approach which I think works better, let me know what you think :-)

New episodes of LM2 will go up every weekend from today onwards.

On another note, my beloved chimp is nearing its 2000th visitor, and with a few people from Melbourne being amongst those that have purchased one I’m hoping to see it on the street one day. Thanks to everyone who has helped make this design an unexpected success :-)

LM2 is a webcomic that follows on from “LONELY MONSTERS”, a graphic novel published in 2008 (and as the last print-run is nearly gone it will be soon be going up on Blurb). Each week a new page will be posted here, and also at (where it’s a bit easier to read, just click on the image below and it’ll take you there).

I hope you get a kick out of reading it. I know I get a kick out of making it :-)

Thanks to a bunch of great folks for picking up some of the following items…

This crazy chimp continues to be my most popular t-shirt design to date, which is fine by me as I’m quite fond of the little scamp.

And don’t forget to check out my previous journal entry for details on how you can get your dirty little hands on some original Matthew Dunn art :-)

This Weeks Feature Thanks

Big thanks to the following groups for featuring my work throughout the week, it’s always appreciated!

Tee HQ featured THE HUNTER

Splatter, Smudge, Smear & Drip! featured IT’S ALIVE

HORRORAMA and Unconventional Artistry both featured LM2

Second comes right aft....oh wait, I came first this time!

A very big thank you to everyone that voted for the below piece….

….which put it in first place for the CONTRAST challenge over at the International Superheroes of Drawing, Illustration and World Domination Group.

There were some really amazing pieces in the mix so it’s a thrill and honour to be chosen.

It's A Wonderful Day

We’ve spent the last 2 months renovating our home from top to bottom, which has been quite a challenging experience considering I operate from a home-based studio. In those 2 months I’ve been shifting my computer and art gear from room to room, more recently having to set up on our bed in the loungeroom surrounded by boxes of comics and toys and other such things.

Last night we put the final lick of paint down in the studio, so today I can finally move back in and set up shop.

Then I can get some more watercolour work done without dealing with 2 curious cats always wanting to walk across the pages :-)

Exhibition Teaser

Went and checked out all the works being set up for tomorrows opening of The Owl And The Pussy Cat. Looks like it’s going to be a great opening with a wonderful mix of artists. Here’s a sneak peak at one of the pieces I’ve got in the show (it’s 100cm x 40cm)

And in case you decide to come along…

Before the show I’ll also be going along to Armageddon (a comic/sci-fi convention), fighting my way through and army of Cosplay and Wrestling mayhem to meet one of my artistic heroes Bill Sienkiewicz.

Start Talkin' Part 3

I was initially going to apply the watercolours with colour, but the detail seemed too fidgety, so went for a graywash (which is looking much more sinister than I expected).

Start Talkin' Parts 1 & 2

Parts 1 & 2 of something new. Part 1 is just a very loose sketch to get the basics worked out

I didn’t post this part of the process yesterday because the “loose sketches” more often than not make little sense to anyone but me (this one is a bit cleaner/clearer than normal).

Listening to Tom Waits “The Black Rider” album (his collaboration with William Burroughs……one of the greatest team-ups in history).

Features Ahoy!!

Just logged on to find that this piece I finished off last night…

…..has been featured in the Art section. Thanks for the support!!

Also, big thanks to the Horrorama and Grunge groups for also featuring my work of late.

Deer God (Save Us) - Part 3 - Gray Wash

This is the step, more than any other, where I can always hear a little voice in the back of my head saying “Don’t f#ck it up man” :-)

I like where I’m at with this stage so that little voice doesn’t have anything to worry about.

Next stage I add more inks.

Deer God (Save Us) - Part 2 - Ink Linework

This first round of inks is mostly tightening up the pencils and making a few small changes. I also get a clearer idea of how to approach the next stage while doing this. Still listening to Mr Beast at this point.

Next is an ink/watercolour wash.

Deer God (Save Us) - Part 1 - Pencils

Started on a new piece today for use as a print and t-shirt. Thought I’d save each part of the process to post up here as I go.

Here’s the first step, pencils.

Well, actually, the first step tends to involve coffee, a blank piece of paper, and me staring out the window for about 20 minutes trying to decide what album to listen to while I draw (it was Mogwai’s “Mr Beast” in this instance).

Perspective’s a bit off in parts, but I’ll fix that as I go.

Next up I’ll be throwing some inks down.

Hayfever VS The Artist

It’s a relatively warm day today, warmer than we’ve had of late, and the air is quite dusty as a result, with a mild breeze blowing it around. As a result my hayfever has hit me hard and I can’t stop sneezing. Drives me crazy. And my eyes are all puffy and red as well now, so I look like someone who just stepped out of the back of a van in an old Cheech & Chong movie!!!

So, seeing as how I can’t draw a straight line without sneezing halfway through it, and can barely focus on anything I’m doing anyway, I’m going to kick back, drink way too much coffee, smoke a few too many cigarettes, and do something that I very rarely have time to do.

If you yourself have a chance to do nothing today I recommend you embrace it wholeheartedly and enjoy doing so :-)

Second Comes Right After First

This creepy bastard of mine……..

…..came in second in the “Monsters, Ghosts and Ghoulies” challenge over at the International Superheroes of Drawing, Illustration and World Domination Group. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, there were a lot of great pieces in the challenge.

I’ve been completely offline for a week now, thanks to some workers cutting through my phone/internet cables while digging up our driveway. I’m currently sitting in an internet cafe trying to catch up on emails and PM’s.

And I’ve been missing my daily redbubble action like crazy!!!!!!!

I hope you’re all doing well, and when I get back online (hopefully) early-ish next week expect a whole bunch of new art to be posted.
