USAF: McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender by

I was passing by Travis Air Force Base while on my way home from an errand my wife sent me on when I saw some activity. I pulled over at the side of the road and got some low fly-by’s.

This refueling jet made several passes over me as the pilot was training on take offs and landings. I like how this photo with the wheels partially contracted turned out. These things are cool to watch as they traverse the nearby skies at low altitude and make heavy bank turns.

Yes, I am an aviation nerd…

I work in aerospace and I love planes. this one is a huge bird. nice shot.

  • You are so lucky! I dream of planes myself. Hopefully I’ll be getting up close and personal with a few later this spring at SFO… If I do, I’ll be posting.

you love planes… few years ago I had the chance to sit down in the pilot seat of a F-18 Hornet!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F/A-18_Hornet
it was inside the hangar but let me tell you that I will never forget the feeling I had. seem to be small when you see it fly but when you are inside, that’s really huge! I had few other cool experiences in other birds. I went inside a canadian CL-415
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_415
I went inside a canadian helicopter Sea King and climbed on the top of the (huge) rotor. so cool!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SH-3_Sea_King
I went in many kind of planes. those ones were the most impressive.
anyway. I had a chance that most of the people will never have.

  • I totally dig F/A-18 Hornets! You’re definitely lucky! I’d love to sit in the back seat and have the pilot do the “make the passenger puke” maneuvers just to have the opportunity. It will never happen I know… but a guy can dream.

I’ve been in the cockpit of a C-5 Galaxy and that was impressive… I 747 and a DC-10 as well, back when I wanted to be a pilot and before I found out my eyesight would keep me from being eligible.

The drummer in my band guides the planes to the terminal at SFO (with the glowing orange sticks) for United and says he can get me in some cockpits and next to the runways. He said we’d aim for the middle of April… I think I need to bug him.
