Night shooting at SFO…

I was on my way home from the Moffett Field shoot when I decided to try my hand at some long exposure night shots over at San Francisco International Airport… from a good distance away at a regional park that is heavily patrolled. It’s nice to feel like a criminal while taking photographs…

The thing is, I really wish there were some better vantage spots for getting great images of these beauties with my trusty 200mm lens.

I have family who work at SFO and still can’t get in to any place where you can just watch the planes. I think it’s completely ridiculous, the extent of overzealous cautiousness that is exhibited at our local airports that keeps photographers from getting close to the action, while terrorists can still board an airliner with explosives. It’s all a lot of bureaucratic nonsense if you ask me and is not the answer.

There used to be a time here at SFO when you could watch the jetliners taxi up to you, within 50 yards from the fence line that is now cordoned off for security purpose. You could also stand by the fence at long term parking and watch 747 Jumbo Jets take off directly over you. It was a spectacular experience!

Meanwhile, because of threats that are real and should be dealt with, the people who want to make everyone safe are doing it all wrong and instead are eliminating the joy of those who are fascinated by flight by making the simple pleasure of viewing these big birds a task.

Sorry for the rant… I had to have my little say….

Totally agree with you. It is way over the top and we must not allow them to bully us. Interesting journal entry here

What a great shot Matt! Love the starburst effect you got from the lights. The lighting is awesome as well.

  • Yeah, it worked out well. I set the f/stop at f/25 and hoped the jet wouldn’t move in the 27 seconds the shutter was open. f/20-f/25 is the same thing as squinting the eyes I found out… makes great star flares.
