Sunset at Death Valley
Death Valley wants to kill you…. seriously.
I felt it try as I hiked out for 45 minutes deep into the sand dunes with a full canteen of water. Within an hour the canteen was dry and my lips were starting to chap and my throat was sore and dry.
The other thing is… when you hike out for 45 minutes… the hike back (in the dark) is also a minimum of that same time.
Like I stated… Death Valley wants to kill you…

this is stunning!! the clor and DOF are wonderful
MattGranz replied
Thanks Barbara! I believe I shot this particular at a tighter f stop than usual… like f16 or so… so that everything would be more in focus.
AnaCBStudio
Beautiful lighting and colors
MattGranz replied
Thanks! The desert is often beautiful.
Kurt Golgart
Wonderful shot of a spectacular locale. I was there a month ago . I was very pleased to know that I wasn’t there later in the year. It wasn’t that warm but certainly gave me taste of what it would be like just a few weeks into Spring and Summer.
MattGranz replied
Kurt, your shot is excellent! Fantastic details. It was only 87 degrees out when I had this experience… would have had a hard time if it was summer weather.
lorilee
Incredilbly beautiful!!!!!
MattGranz replied
Thanks Lorilee!
Scott d'Almeida

MattGranz replied

Deadly beauty Kenny… Deadly beauty.
Andrew Murrell
WOW!!!! This is Fantastic. From the ripples in the sand in the forground to the mountains the image is well balanced. Love the colour contrast between the sky and the ground as well. A FAV for sure
MattGranz replied
Thanks Andrew! The dunes at Stovepipe wells have so many cool vistas that it’s overwhelming. The mountain does help to give some added interest doesn’t it? Thanks again!
Elizabeth Bravo
What gorgeous depth to the shadow. I love the depth of color also due to the time of day. BEAUTIFUL JOB!!
MattGranz replied
Yeah, the sun was just setting… while on the other dunes I saw people pointing their cameras at the sun, I decided to look the other way. Thanks for your wonderful comment!
Béla Török

MattGranz replied

wow…this is stunning..it literally caught my breath, such amazing textures and shadows and rich lush colours and I love the corrugations in the sand..really beautiful work Matt. My only memory of Death Valley was flying over it in a sesna and praying that the pigtailed pilot was really alot older (and experienced) than she appeared lol
MattGranz replied
That’s a funny comment! Thanks for the nice thoughts too!
Arek Rainczuk
Wow, great shot.
ps. you’ve got some great work here!
MattGranz replied
Arek, you are very kind. Thank you!
Kathleen Hill
Amazing image! Seriously though, seems to me you have been to many of the places the great photos are often enough to capture some great shots
MattGranz replied
Yes, but I’m selfish and want more, more, more! LOL! Thanks for the kind thought. I’m having fun. I’m digging your photostream too!
Robert Armstrong
Superb image, wonderful colours, composition and combination of textures!
MattGranz replied
Thanks Robert! The textures were definitely part of what I was going for… finding contrast and interest… thanks for noticing! I appreciate your comment.
laureenr
Brilliant image. Love the contrast between mountain and desert.
MattGranz replied
Thanks Laureernr! There was definitely a want to get contrast between the various textures and I’m glad you noticed. Thanks!
solo75
Nice colors!
MattGranz replied
Thanks solo! The colors are due to the lowering sun that was just starting to set behind me.
Radek Hofman

MattGranz replied
Thanks Radek! Yeah, the textures out there are fantastic.
John Kowalski
Fabulous image Matt, excellent colours and contrast!!
MattGranz replied
Thanks John, that’s some compliment! I was lucky to get out to this spot this day. I hope to again in the fall… it’s much too hot now.

Mac
MattGranz replied
Thanks Mac!
joak
well it was worth dyin for..great shot!
MattGranz replied
Well joak, I wouldn’t go that far, but it certainly was worth getting dehydrated so badly that I needed to drink large amounts of water for the next three days… Thanks again for the encouraging words!
Vicki Ferrari
Love your DRY humour Matt! And it really brings your image to life (even though it wants to bury you under its dunes!!) So you take enough water for at least 90 minutes, plus photography time!! Wonderful photography!
MattGranz replied
Someone finally understands my sense of humor… and they are halfway around the world from here!
Definitely bring a gallon of water to any remote area of Death valley… and don’t hike it in the summer.
The dunes are beautiful, but deadly.
Danica Radman ...
wohooo greatissimo photo
Micci Shannon
WOW! This is awesome! Great depth. The texture of the sand is so cool. I can even see some kind of footprints on the left. The colors are perfect. I’d say the chapped lips were worth it for this shot. But DEATH VALLEY??? EEEKS! You must be part lizzard! LOL
MattGranz replied
actually, I’m part camel. A little water goes a long way in my system. I actually loathe the taste of water (strange huh?) and have to force myself to drink each day. I’ll tell you however, that after I got back to the car, I must have drank a gallon.
Micci Shannon
Haha! I bet you did! Part camel huh… you hide the humps on your back so well! LOL!
