Sunset at Death Valley

Sunset at Death Valley

Death Valley wants to kill you…. seriously.

I felt it try as I hiked out for 45 minutes deep into the sand dunes with a full canteen of water. Within an hour the canteen was dry and my lips were starting to chap and my throat was sore and dry.

The other thing is… when you hike out for 45 minutes… the hike back (in the dark) is also a minimum of that same time.

Like I stated… Death Valley wants to kill you…

Wonderful shot of a spectacular locale. I was there a month ago . I was very pleased to know that I wasn’t there later in the year. It wasn’t that warm but certainly gave me taste of what it would be like just a few weeks into Spring and Summer.

  • MattGranz replied

Kurt, your shot is excellent! Fantastic details. It was only 87 degrees out when I had this experience… would have had a hard time if it was summer weather.

What gorgeous depth to the shadow. I love the depth of color also due to the time of day. BEAUTIFUL JOB!!

  • MattGranz replied

Yeah, the sun was just setting… while on the other dunes I saw people pointing their cameras at the sun, I decided to look the other way. Thanks for your wonderful comment!

wow…this is stunning..it literally caught my breath, such amazing textures and shadows and rich lush colours and I love the corrugations in the sand..really beautiful work Matt. My only memory of Death Valley was flying over it in a sesna and praying that the pigtailed pilot was really alot older (and experienced) than she appeared lol

  • MattGranz replied

That’s a funny comment! Thanks for the nice thoughts too!

  • Arek Rainczuk

well it was worth dyin for..great shot!

  • MattGranz replied

Well joak, I wouldn’t go that far, but it certainly was worth getting dehydrated so badly that I needed to drink large amounts of water for the next three days… Thanks again for the encouraging words!

  • Vicki Ferrari

    Vicki Ferrari

Love your DRY humour Matt! And it really brings your image to life (even though it wants to bury you under its dunes!!) So you take enough water for at least 90 minutes, plus photography time!! Wonderful photography!

  • MattGranz replied

Someone finally understands my sense of humor… and they are halfway around the world from here!

Definitely bring a gallon of water to any remote area of Death valley… and don’t hike it in the summer.

The dunes are beautiful, but deadly.

  • Danica Radman - Tazzina

    Danica Radman ...

    wohooo greatissimo photo

  • Micci Shannon

    Micci Shannon

WOW! This is awesome! Great depth. The texture of the sand is so cool. I can even see some kind of footprints on the left. The colors are perfect. I’d say the chapped lips were worth it for this shot. But DEATH VALLEY??? EEEKS! You must be part lizzard! LOL

  • MattGranz replied

actually, I’m part camel. A little water goes a long way in my system. I actually loathe the taste of water (strange huh?) and have to force myself to drink each day. I’ll tell you however, that after I got back to the car, I must have drank a gallon.

  • Micci Shannon

    Micci Shannon

Haha! I bet you did! Part camel huh… you hide the humps on your back so well! LOL!
