Shelf Cloud Slams Pittsburgh International
I was waiting for our flight back to California with my wife and kids when this monster came upon us somewhere around 45 mph, blasting lightning all over the place and making quite the scene. As soon as it came upon us, it was gone. This is one of seven shots I managed to squeeze off.

Ominous clouds to say the least, hope you were grounded, great shot Matt :-))

Yeah, our flight was delayed for about a half an hour… lucky we had a long layover in between flights! Thanks for the comment!

Meike
Wow… what a capture and atmosphere! Somehow spooky!
MattGranz replied
Meike, it was spooky actually. The clouds when first seen looked charcoal black and like a huge wall coming right at us. Lightning was blasting everywhere and so yes… spooky describes it well.
Cassie Gannon
Great capture. I would be changing my mind about flying that day.
MattGranz replied
The only reason I didn’t want to fly on that day Cassie was that there were a lot of cool storms going on and I wanted to chase them…. heh heh heh… yes, I worry my wife…
Andrew Murrell
Looks evil. was it a good storm?
MattGranz replied
It was a wicked storm indeed, producing much lightning, terribly strong winds and turning the day into night for about five minutes. I wanted to go storm chasing this year in the central plains, but house buying is keeping me from it till next year. I want to see more of these monsters!
