Body Analysis

Body Analysis

This work is about over analysing your own body. For me, I’ve had issues with my face (days when I just look and feel ugly, especially after too many nights up late causing bags to appear under the eyes), stomach (too much fat, too little fat, I haven’t had a gut that I’ve been truly happy with), penis (when watching porn, I do tend to feel my average size is inadequate against the guys who have elephant trunks for sexual organs) and my feet (which are really big and kind has lead to comments from primary school like “you wear clown shoes” or “you have kangaroo feet”).

Liquid emulsion on mirror tiles, framed in stained recycled wood.

so has doing this helped you to stop analysing?

  • Mathew Reed replied

We’ll see, I only just finished the work today. I doubt it would. I did this as an observation of a part of who I am. Not to try and help me get over it.

fantastic concept and amazing results exposed on the tiles.

  • Mathew Reed replied

Thanks, I’ve been quietly achieving. Ha ha…
Well not so quietly… There was a lot of “ucking *unt piece of *it, why won’t you *ucking work!!!”
v_v it’s been one hell of a month trying to get the liquid light to work properly, there was one issue after another. I couldn’t believe it as it usually acts really well behaved for me.
I have assessment this week, so this is one of the works I’ll be submitting…

Matt this is just fantastic – your work looks so polished and sophisticated. I really love how the whole thing is resolved, it just works so well. Congrats dude, I hope you get great marks and (more importantly) are really proud of how it’s turned out.

  • Mathew Reed replied

Ha ha, yes I am pretty proud of it. Especially now that I have received positive feedback from others. It was such a great feeling once I realised it was complete. Now I just have to impress the teachers! :P

Outstanding work, Mathew, I especially impressed by the technique. On the matter of self image, well, some days I find you pass the mirror and catch a glimpse and think, “hmmm, I could fuck that,” other days you think, “Jesus, where did that hideous bag come from?” Best to try not to worry too much about what’s on the outside and be proud of what’s on the inside.

  • Mathew Reed replied

LOL yeah, that’s true. I guess I do that in all things though, especially my art, I analyse until I hate it. But then in a way I guess I do that so I learn what I don’t like and what areas I need to focus on for next time. I guess I really can’t do that to my face :P Although… facelifts and botox and the likes >_> haha, nah, that’s totally not me.

dang this is so awesome! I love the way the piece is formed, as if you were literally trailing down one’s body and examining it. interesting form it is displayed on, and the liquid light is wonderful and eerie. one day, i hope i could be a patron to your work!!

  • Mathew Reed replied

Thanks, hopefully I’ll end up being successful and become a world traveling artist so you can attend one of my exhibits :P

I intended the structure to act like the body linking all the images together, I didn’t think it felt right when the were separate. So I’m glad you got the impression of trailing down a body like you did.
