The Ugly Truth
In today’s society thin is “in”. What happened to the voluptuous female? Her hips and thighs full of unspoken promises. Breasts and tummy made for a pillow? An arse that a man could grip and sink his fingers into.
Now women physically alter themselves to what they think men want:

I think I rather spend my money on something more fun and enjoy the wonderful foods that are out there.
Art has depicted women as:

One of the iconic women of the twentieth century:

What happened to au naturale? No matter what body shape- you are beautiful. Let’s promote a generation of “healthy” women. This is my stomach. I am not over weight. A size 10 is a little too big for me, but it’s comfortable. I used to be a 6-7 when I worked out everyday and ate very little. I may have been thin and muscular, but it didn’t make me any happier. So, what if my stomach isn’t hard as steel? It’s okay with me. :-)

Thank you! (and I take another bite of my offbrand fruit loops) I just get tired of seeing conformity especially when it comes to weight and looks. I may not look like a sex kitten, but by God I can eat a cheese burger guilt free!

such bravery…the top two photos are just as phony to me as the three skinny girls….it’s a rare woman that naturally and _ comfortably_ looks like any of them!
i’s wager they all went to great unnatural lengths to look this way!!!
MaryK replied
Thank-you for your comment! The top two are of Ice-T’s wife, Coco, she is known as “Miss Plastic Surgery 200something”. The last three are under scrutiny for eating disorders. People need to see the beauty in the natural female form whether you are naturally thin or more to love. I totally agree!!! How did we get this way? Where we go to unnatural means for someone to tell us we’re “pretty”?
Reese Forbes
Nicely thoughtful image. Although you should be talking about “people” instead of just women – men have to try to conform to a certain image if they want to be considered attractive to the women.

You have a good point. I just tend to notice it more in women. Thank you!

We just come in all shapes and sizes and there is no role model of perfection…..even if the media would try and sell this sad story to us…..I do think the generation today of young women are really not buying the propaganda as much….hope more find this understanding. Brilliant look at how real women are…. :)
MaryK replied
Thank you! I agree- having worked in high schools… it makes me sad to see such apathy and vanity. I hope there are women out their who are pushing this issue like I do- if we can reach one it’s worth it. Beauty is everywhere, we just have to open our eyes and see it!

If you read alot of stuff thats printed, men say they like women with curves, abit of flesh, but then look at all the porn that is spun around the cyber globe. all with ultra slim women of a certain age, shape etc. hard for women not to get drawn into this image. womens mags aren’t any better. criticising one for being too skinny and then another for putting on weight….. I look back at photos when i was slimmer and remember how i felt at the time – just like I feel now!!! Not good enough….. thanks for posting your image and the other pics and text. helps to remind me its about the whole person not certain parts. Excellent. :) xx

Thank you! Do what makes you happy- if it makes you feel good about yourself- do it! Make sure that you do it for yourself… not for other people. I am sure you are beautiful just the way you are! My mother had a gastric bypass and is getting a face lift. I have two cousins with the band. All those situations have been positive changes. My mother got out of her sweat pants and LOVES buying and wearing nice clothes again. Both my cousins dress differently as well. They feel good about themselves! I see a light that wasn’t there before because their self esteem has risen by leaps and bounds. They all went from 250+ to a healthier weight range. I will be praying for a successful outcome with surgery. Thank you for taking the time to look and comment! :-)

Here I’ve been feeling bad about myself because I’m not as thin as I used to be… though exercise and eating healthy are definitely important, I know it’s also important to love your body. I’ve usually had excellent self esteem. But for some reason I seem to be absolutely hating the way I am right now after having gained weight. I definitely think there needs to be a balance. It’s not good with how many obese people there are in the world today (you are from the states as am I, we both know we have a serious obesity problem here). Though I’m not and have never been obese. In fact up until about 2 years ago, I was naturally underweight even though I ate all the time. But now that I’ve gotten more of a tummy and my thighs got bigger, I feel bad about myself… I really shouldn’t. I’m honestly at a healthy weight for my height, but I think even though I’ve never felt bad about my weight in the past.. society has probably effected me subconsciously with all those images of thin women floating around in the media. It’s really disgusting…. and I almost feel ashamed for allowing it to effect me this way. But I still feel like I want to do stomach crunches and lose the fat…. I guess I’m conflicted now. But I didn’t used to be. However I think women with curves are beautiful as opposed to stick figures.
MaryK replied
I have been where you are… the guilt over not looking like you did just a couple of years ago. We can’t help it sometimes when the media is throwing these airbrushed images and pointing out the flaws of having a little extra around our stomachs and thighs. Look at these women who kill themselves working out and eating very little. Celebrities work out 2-3 times a day and have chefs making perfect meals for them. How can the everyday woman do that? Working out too much can be just as bad as not working out at all. Who wants to eat/drink food, like Slimfast, Nutri-system, Jenny Craig, that is pre-packaged and over processed. I have done Jenny Craig and Slimfast- it did terrible things to my system and tasted strange. I was not overweight. I just thought I had to look a certain way. I finally embraced myself. I liked having larger breasts- I had always had small ones. My husband definately appreciated my new assets and new attitude towards meals. I don’t know what has happened in the last 20 or so years. In earlier times, men used to choose a wife based on the size of her hips- larger hips were seen as healthy and ready to bear children. With those hips came larger breasts which men’s attitudes towards those have not changed. Thin women used to be seen as “sickly” and “fragile” which is a whole other animal in itself- because that is another injustice. I know you’ve seen the works of great painters- they painted real women! Cellulite and all! They were seen a beautiful works of art. You are beautiful I have seen your work! Never doubt that! I have learned to love the softness of my body. I eat what I want to but I also through some healthy stuff in the mix. My workout is teaching kids. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life doing crunches and running just to get arthritis somewhere later. I’m glad this made you think! LOVE YOUR WORK BY THE WAY! So, glad to hear from you.

About a year or so back, I saw two British magazines on the same shelf of a newsagent. Side by side. One showed skinny celebrities and gleefully suggested eating disorders. One showed “fat” celebrities and crowed over the fact that they’d fallen from their pedestals.
Thing is, those magazines created those pedestals in the first place, then undermined the foundations, then waited for the celebrities to fall. These magazines triumphantly point out every tiny little imperfection. And these magazines give women idealistic and unrealistic images to strive towards, purge themselves for and generally fail to achieve.
I don’t mean to dump all the blame for the entire culture on this area alone, but when I saw those two magazines, side-by-side, I wondered what the margin for error was. And I was too jaded to feel outraged, so instead I just sighed and moved on.

Wow, this hits home…as a teenage boy…you see girls (and women) as “prizes.” And, looks are, for some reason, a reason that a relationship is made or broken. I can’t say I have much experience in that because I don’t, but the world is more than looks. This makes me emotional because a majority of girls believe that they have to cut, remove, or change something about their bodies to make people like them. This couldn’t be further from the truth and it is my hope that people acknowledge this…even if it’s just me…and it makes the world a littler nicer. Well done. =)
