Numbat

Numbat

This is one of the numbats at the Perth Zoo. The Numbat is a small marsupial, found in Western Australia, with a diet consisting primarily of termites.

It is a threatened species (currently classified as “vulnerable”), and the Perth Zoo has been breeding Numbats successfully for release into the wild since 1986.

By early 2007, the Perth Zoo had provided 110 Numbats to the Department of Environment and Conservation for release into protected habitats.

lovely – I wonder if the numbat is related to the ”? extinct” Tasmanian tiger? stripes on the back but definitely different sizing etc….but I wonder…..

I wish we had these fellas in northern New South Wales. I would welcome any predator of the dreaded termite. – Great shot.

This shot is fantastic! I did umm and ahhh a bit when you submitted it to the Mother Natures Finest group, BUT as an ecologist and given its threatened status I had to accept it!:) We have such a fantastic assemblage of mammals in Australia, not found anywhere else in the world, and we are content to let them dissappear with one of the highest rates of mammal extinction in the world. Sickening really!

Great shot of an amazing creature. It’s a pity it’s natural habitats are disappearing & threats from introduced species are increasing. Its frightening to see how massively the natural distribution of the numbat has shrunk in the last 30 years.
