I was watching an animation called The Illusionist by Sylvain Chomet, the creator of Belleville Rendez-Vous, arguably (by me) the best animation ever created, and was captivated by the perspective of the backgrounds in the Edinburgh scenes.
I have been experimenting with the notion of capturing the feel of perspective without adhering to the rules and creating abstractions with the results.
I watched the film again and chose my favourite scenes and made some very rudimentary scetches of form, line and space. These were further developed on the canvas in a loose way to dissolve the origins of the piece. I then began to reconstruct the painting and the result is what you see.
The original has now been sold.
