A pair of American Avocets (Recurvirostra americana) mating at the Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge, Oregon, USA.

The Summer Lake Basin supports more than 250 species of birds and consequently is a very popular bird watching area. This large wetland marsh area is ideal breeding habitat for American Avocets who form breeding colonies numbering dozens of pairs and nest close to the water and will lay up to 4 eggs.
