A Yellow-headed Blackbird on a reed looking for insects. Photographed at Summer Lake Wildlife Reserve, Oregon, USA.
The Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) is a medium-sized blackbird . The adult male is mainly black with a yellow head and breast and a pointed bill. The breeding habitat of the bird is cattail marshes in North America, mainly west of the Great Lakes. Their nest is built with and attached to marsh vegetation. The birds forage in the marsh reeds, in fields or on the ground and sometimes catch insects in flight. They mainly eat seeds and insects The bird is known for its song resembling the grating of a rusty hinge!
