A Purple Heron wading stealthily in shallow water in search of food. This large wading bird is 80-90 cm tall, with a 120-150 cm wingspan and breeds in colonies, in reed beds or trees close to large lakes or other extensive wetlands, in Africa, central and southern Europe, and southern and eastern Asia. It feeds in shallow water, as can be seen in this image, and will spear fish, frogs, insects, small mammals, reptiles and small birds. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its intended victim.
Photographed in its natural habitat at Apothica on the Greek Island of Lesvos.
