A Yellow-bellied Marmot enjoys a good scratch in the rocky hills overlooking Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming, USA.
Also known as Rock Chucks they usually weigh between 5 and 11 pounds when fully grown but get fatter in the fall just before hibernating. Their territory is about 4 to 7 acres around a number of summer burrows. They choose to dig burrows under rocks because they are less likely to seen by predators such as wolves, foxes, and coyotes. If a marmot sees a predator, it will whistle to warn all other marmots in the area (from which it gets the nickname “whistle pig”). Then it will typically hide in a nearby rock pile. They are diurnal like most mammals and are also omnivores, eating grass, leaves, flowers, fruit, grasshoppers, and bird eggs. Marmots reproduce when about two years old, and may live up to an age of 15 years.
