This young Black Bear (Ursus americanus) cub was exploring a grassy meadow in Yellowstone and kept stopping to smell the wildflowers and grasses, presumably to decide whether there was anything that would be tasty enough to eat. I watched and photographed him for around half an hour and during this time there was no sign of his mother and he didn’t seem in the least bit concerned about my presence. Photographic opportunities were however limited as the grasses were mostly taller than he was so it was difficult to get a clear shot!

Great shot. At least he peeked through that tall grass enough for you to get this wonderful capture. Hope his Mom was somewhere close though…

  • Thank you very much for your comment Karen. We actually saw him at the same location on two different occasions, but his mom didn’t appear to be around on either.
