Taken a split second after Final Approach a magnificent Bald Eagle, firmly clutching a recently caught fish in its talons, dramatically reduces speed as it prepares to land on the nest and feed its young. Note how the eagle curves its powerful wings inwards and spreads its tail feathers in an effort to slow down its descent.
Photographed off the east coast of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada this is one of literally thousands of images I’ve taken at this Bald Eagle’s nest. After many visits and hours of waiting patiently and after numerous failed attempts I eventually captured the kind of shot I had been waiting for of one of the eagles returning to the nest clutching a fish in its talons. I was truly inspired by the occasion and have returned to photograph at the same nest site many times in subsequent years. For further details of my experiences photographing at this nest site please see here
This is one of the images used in my Fly with the Eagles calendar.
