Baby Boomer

Being a baby boomer as it turns out wasn’t a bad thing…
I have a lot of good memories of simpler times,
Like black and white TV on a very small screen.

In the summer we played outside all day long…
We dug underground forts in the citrus groves,
And lobbed oranges like they were grenades,
And threw dirt clods like they were bombs!

I was filthy dirty from head to toe,
A barefoot ragamuffin constantly on the run…
After all it was summertime,
And summer was all about having fun.

I collected bottles and ran to the corner store…
Three cents a bottle doesn’t sound like much,
But each bottle I found,
I felt like I had really scored.

I spent as much time as I could at the public pool,
It cost twenty-five cents to get in…
And after watching kids that could afford lessons long enough,
You know what, I taught myself how to swim.

Hand me down shoes and hand me down clothes,
I remember all too well using cardboard inserts,
To cover the holes in my soles.

We were physically fit with energy to burn…
And no matter what games we played,
We couldn’t wait until it was our turn.

Yeah being a baby boomer as it turns out,
Really wasn’t a bad thing…
Beats the hell out of Xbox,
And spending all day in front of a 57” flat screen!

Because I’m tired of hearing how bored the kids are today!

Too true Marty. I remember it well. Always outside. Imagination to be anything we wanted. & horse riding. One of my favourite pastimes.

  • Hi Gail, now days kids just play with their cell phones texting all day long!
