A screaming man is seemingly swallowed up by a huge crevice in the abandoned highway on the outskirts of Centralia, PA.
A mine fire has been burning under the town since 1962. A government relocation program began in 1984 and finished in 2005. Only a handful of residents and buildings remain of what was once a community of 1,000 people.
In 1994 this section of Route 61 was closed because of buckling of the pavement and a bypass was built around it. (The abandoned roadway is covered with colorful, but mostly profane graffiti which is not fit for children to see.)
