The Vermont State House, also known as the People’s House, is located in Montpelier. It is the smallest city to serve as a U.S. state capital.
This Greek Revival style structure is the third building on the site and was designed by Thomas Silloway. The building was completed in 1858 and occupied the following year. It is located on State Street, just one block north of the Winooski River.
We were not planning to stop in Montpelier, but one quick glimpse of this striking building with its gold leaf dome glistening against a crystal blue sky was enough to convince us to make a quick detour.
