The first view of the great pyramid at Giza, the tomb of the ancient pharaoh, Khufu.
The pyramids were built as a staircase for which the god king would reach the afterlife. They also took with them their treasures. The pyramids may have failed in their role to protect the king and his treasure in the afterlife, but they have succeeded in continuing to grant life to their names at least of these ancient people long since their time, 4,000 years ago.
