I guess it’s something of a silly title, but that’s all I can think of every time I look at this photo. Taken a little down river from the Eiffel Tower. I’m still not sure what the statue represented, but with the light on it and the tower in the late afternoon sun, it seemed as if the two were locked into some scene together. The first thought that entered my mind was Don Quixote tilting at windmills. That’s when I realized this statue was locked in an everlasting jousting match with the Eiffel Tower, day and night, unable to leave this match forever more.
Oblivious to the scene behind them, meanwhile, a little couple stands and admires the tower, the perfect antithesis to my fanciful tale around them.
It was years after the fact but I discovered that this statue is Called “France Reborn” in English and the figure I fancifully considered Don Quixote is actually Joan of Arc! I still like my original interpretation, but I’m glad to know the historic figure represented!
