The Big Chicken - Marietta Georgia Landmark by

Part of my Atlanta Icons series, the Big chicken is a fixture in Marietta, one of Atlanta’s nearer suburbs. The Big Chicken was originally built in 1963 to advertise what was then Johnny Reb’s Chick, Chuck and Shake restaurant. In 1974 it became part of the KFC chain. When there were threats to move the chicken to Smyrna in later years, there was a public uproar and the Big Chicken stayed.

In Marietta, everyone gives directions based on proximity to the Big Chicken, i.e. turn left at the Big Chicken, or a mile north of the Big Chicken, etc. The Big Chicken definitely qualifies as an icon of the fabric that is Marietta and Metro Atlanta.

wonderful work. you had to do some work on this one. i’ve got one just like it but the electric lines ruined my shot.

  • Considering it’s KFC now, I wanted to make it a little more abstract (including removing KFC and Pepsi from the sign) to avoid any corp issues with it. That and the polaroid effect took a bit of time! Thanks much – one of my recent favs (the photo is not new, but the design is). I hated all the cars in the way (in 20 years they’ll look vintage) but it was the only direction something wasn’t in the way – it’s a hard place to get a good shot for sure!
