His Majesty King Pumpkin Not Happy by

This is a photo of a cat named Pumpkin that I photographed just the other day for the Animal Care & Control of New York City. It’s the official animal adoption/shelter of NYC and it’s where I’m a volunteer contributor in the guise of a photographer. You see everything there, not much of it very pleasant but sometimes something will make you smile or warm your heart. Pumpkin’s one of those instances. He clearly wasn’t a happy camper in that getup but he was a real trooper in allowing me to photograph him and that made me very happy! Someone will take to him and adopt him for certain. He’s a gigantic loverboy! Click on his photo to enlarge.

Something catches my eye and I photograph it, always with the intention of reworking it into something I can call my own. My thinking: It’s not what you look at that matters but what you see and how you see it. That’s what makes the difference. That’s where the artist shines.

    Hi Mark, this is a great image – fascinating, sad and funny – I feel a bit guilty for laughing at Pumpkin – ridiculous, poignant… a metaphor for the human condition?? LOL

  • Kinda yeah… but also perhaps a metaphor for so many little abandoned angels. It would be wrong to laugh at him so let us laugh with him. :7}) Thanks Rachel, for your thoughts. You’re one of a kind and I say that with great affection!

    Oh how sad, great capture…

  • Hi Stormygirl. Please don’t feel too bad for Pumpkin. Someone will adopt him, I know it. Thanks as always for your comment. :7})

    Pumpkin looks utterly disgusted with this situation. Its so CAT!

  • You betcha! If you or I had that contraption around our necks, we’d probably look the same way, right? Poor guy. :7{

    Utterly divine creature……..and oh, the taste in attire. Nothing like a puss with turned up collar to look just oh, so sexy…….lol. Not a doubt in the world he will get a home…..love him!!!!!

  • Like a knight in shining armor wouldn’t you say? How many would you like Miss? We have one Pumpkin, one Lulu and one Ms. Daisy. Will you be taking one or would you like to take more than one?

    He’s a beauty Mark! I hope he finds a good home…Great photo of him such a character!!!! Janexxx

  • Hehe… yeah, he is a character alright. He let me photograph him while I was laughing and apologizing at the same time for laughing at him and he was such a good sport about it. Stared right at me the whole time (which also made me laugh). I want him but five is enough, lol!

    that’s just too freaky – i love it!

  • Freaky funny right? When I photograph for the animal shelter, I try and make pics with something extra about them because the photos are posted on the Internet and emailed out to a great many rescue groups all in the hope of finding each animal a home. You want them to stand out, get your attention, elicit some kind of empathy, maybe even a little adoration. Pumpkin was a perfect subject to work with! Isn’t he handsome?

    Pumpkin looks so regal here – like Queen Elizabeth I sitting on her throne, bored with everyday life and her subjects petitions. The way you’ve done this – like a profession portrait is a masterstroke Mark. Gorgeous

  • Yes, yes… a regal portrait. It does resemble that, lol! Why didn’t I think of that? What a terrific comment you’ve made here Paul. Maybe I can do a short series of animal portraits based on this theme. Thanks so much for illuminating this my friend!
