Me too now with the fridge magnets! lol Definitely a whimsical take. Wonderful photo!
Mark Ross replied
A big thank you Rubes! So nice hearing from you, really.
Mel Brackstone
What a fabulous capture! They really do look like little magnets…..wow! How hot must it be on that roof?
Mark Ross replied
It wasn’t too hot on my roof which is 35 floors up. The rooftop the couple was on was only 5 floors high so probably it was similar. I love this kind of ultra flat perspective, in this case looking straight downward. Thanks Mel, for your response!
Paul Vanzella
this is so sensational mark – it so has the effect of a hazy hot day, where the scene almost looks plastic in appearance, just to the point of melting… adore the lines in this image as can work as a pure abstract piece in itself, however, the people draw you in to discover an enormous sense of scale and realism at the same time… quite brilliant really!
Mark Ross replied
What a great comment and set of observations you’ve made Paul. Thank you so much for everything you’ve said. Sounds good to my ear! BTW/ the plastic appearance is pure Photoshop. I wanted to disguise the ugliness of the dirty old tar paper and decided to give it a sheen or gloss as it were. That’s the thing about photography I don’t like, the automatism of showing all as it really is. I only want to show what pleases my eye and not just plain reality itself. I guess that’s the painter in me. That’s my former background. Anyhow, love hearing from you Paul and glad you like this!

What I like about this image is the strong horizonal, vertical and diagonal lines that the figures on their sun chairs combine to make and extraordinary scene from life. There is a feeling of heat in a city of concrete and bricks where the people seem to be displaced. Makes me think that they should be at the beach or by a lake. Great capture.
Mark Ross replied
God, that’s all so true Helen! But you do this sort of thing when you can’t get away to the beach or a lake and my feeling is akin to yours in that these people look so terribly displaced. There’s a measure of absurdity in this and all the other images I’ve taken from up high in NYC and I have to admit… I love the absurd! Thanks for taking the time to respond here. I appreciate it greatly!
Adrian Donoghue
What a fabulous capture Mark, its so surreal I thought it was constructed, very well done.
Mark Ross replied
Thanks Adrian… great comment! Does actual qualify as surreal? I don’t know. That’s what I’m wondering.
Tania Rose
I like these small glimpses into simple moments in life.
The angles work so well here, as does the plastic-like tar, and the windows, which initiate the question of which way is up. Apart from the wonderful aesthetics of the composition, one begins to delve into the motivations of the two people, who are small in the scale of the image, but just big enough to invite an empathy from the viewer.
Mark Ross replied
Wow, what an engrossing set of viewpoints you’ve given Tania! How astute your eye is. Thanks you so much for offering that up. I love reading whatever you have to say and I do read your writings too! Very nice to hear from you.

I know my mother-in-law’s fridge door fell off because she had so many on hers. The kids got together and bought her a new fridge…and yes, she put all the magnets on the new one….LOL
Natalie Broome
great perspective and interesting composition, great work!
Mark Ross replied
Hi Natalie. Thanks again!
Heather Hartkamp
He he – love the title – very clever – as is the image. Well spotted. What a view you must have from your home!
Mark Ross replied
Well, if you like city views, it’s pretty cool from up top. I just now came down from there having recorded a mounting storm as it rapidly moved across the skyline from New Jersey towards Queens. On 9/11 I watched the 2 World Trade Center buildings burn and felt the acidity from the smoke as it wafted uptown toward me and into my lungs. That’s etched into my brain forever, as you can well imagine! Thanks for your delightful comment!
Ellen
Original photo, very nicely done!
Mark Ross replied
Thanks Ellen!
Simon Mears
wonderfull stuff!
Mark Ross replied
Thank you my good man!
billyboy
Mark, this is a graphic masterpiece. Your angles and shapes and shades and textures all work in such perfect harmony… I’m blown away because you actually found this happening in reality and used processing simply to give it attitude. You couldn’t have achieved better composition if you had laid it out yourself. Impressive work!
Mark Ross
Thanks billyboy. It takes an artist to understand an artist, especially the way you do. The digital revolution has opened the door to a whole new frontier (sounds like a Startrek mission, yes)? Actually, hehe, it’s a lot like that! BTW/I may even spend as much time on my computer as I’ll bet you do on yours, working out new ways to advance what I’m capable of achieving. In any case, thanks so much for your understanding and generosity. It’s good to feel appreciated!

Truly excellent, love the two dimensional feel to it :-)))
Mark Ross replied
Thanks Liv! I’ve always loved perspective compression. It was probably East Indian art where I first took note of it.
