Waiting For You

Waiting For You

Hunting thruout Venice’s canals and alleys for something special to photograph, I came upon this painted figure at the end of an alley. There was an artist who had painted these shadowy figures thruout Venice the second year that I was in Venice working on a series of photographs of the city by full moonlight. Every now and then you’d come across one. It always took you by surprise because you would never anticipate it. I never found out who the artist was nor do I know what became of the work itself but it held an allure for me. Click once on image to enlarge.

  • Mark Ross replied

Thanks for the compliment Sylvia. Rather high key lighting wouldn’t you say?

Nice one mark, love the blacks in this, I sort of make it feature of my work (a good black, it’s really important)

  • Mark Ross replied

Thanks Anthony. I totally agree with you and yet there are times it doesn’t do the trick; such as when there’s detail in the shadows that you want to preserve. So I find you have to weigh each and every work and determine how you’re going to handle it. My rule of thumb is to hold onto shadow detail where possible and where there’s none, then max the black. The same goes for whites. Every finished work should have a deep black and a bright white somewhere within it if you want to heighten the sense of lighting drama and complete the tonal scale. I find that works best most but not all of the time.

I love all of this series but I think this is my most fave! It has an air of mystery with that figure at the end.

  • Mark Ross replied

Thanks again Tiffany! This identical image was plastered all over Venice by an artist on a mission. Everywhere one went, there it was.
