The Crossing

Freeway underpass – Downtown Guangzhou, China, 2008

“There are crossing lines marked out around the square of the intersection, but basically people will take any criss-crossing line from one side to the other…and the lights and the traffic dont really phase them too much at all! This is a very calm moment the morning after the Chinese New Year celebrations.”

Crazy, this does not seem real at all. Love the lines. Its all completely randomness, they way they’re riding, it looks like a road but I’m not sure? Anyways great job

love how the whole image is sharp. everyone is focussed and determined to go where they need to go, be where they need to be, do what they need to do. you have quenched my visual thirst.

  • Mark Hayward replied

Thankyou Zaldy. Your comments are always thoughtful and inspiring!

Fantastic! So many different directions of lines going on. I was instantly reminded of Shanghai when I saw this. Looks like it may be a refuge from the claustrophobic mayhem going on out on the streets!

  • Mark Hayward replied

Cheers Chels. Awesome that you’ve been to Shanghai…could’nt get up there this time round due to the weather, but apparently it’s pretty amazing…

Thanks Rhys. The traffic will stop at the lights and then the ‘random-ness’ begins…There are crossing lines marked out around the square of the intersection, but basically people will take any criss-crossing line from one side to the other…and the lights and the traffic dont really phase them too much at all! This is very calm moment the morning after the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Good grief, it’s chaos unlimited here, I’d hate to see it at peak hour! What an amazing mixture of lines, crossings, lights and poles! Makes me giddy just trying to make sense of it!

  • Mark Hayward replied

    haha..believe me this is quiet…

  • Mark Hayward replied

Thanks ellie…I was there for 12 days visiting and staying with friends and doing the whole tourist thing. Also I’m half-chinese, and thought hey, why not visit the motherland! What’s got you in Guangzhou? Pretty amazing place hey…

i’ve been fortunate enough to have Guangzhou as a frequent stop for business travel. at this point, if i could get a better grasp of the language, i’d make a great tour guide. :-)

  • Mark Hayward replied

yes, the language…mmm…that’s in the ‘slightly too-hard basket’...though I picked up a tiny bit, about enough to order a coffee anyway!

Wow, a weird kind of retro futuristic image.. the bold huge markings on the columns add a bizarre twist to it: warnings, or festive decor?.. the viewer can decide!
