Haystack Needles - Cannon Beach Oregon
These two seastacks just south of Haystack rock are known as the “Haystack Needles.” This picture was taken just as the sun dipped beneath the horizon. As the tide retreated and left a thin layer of water, I was able to capture this reflection in the beach. Cannon Beach, a city in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States, is an tourist resort destination, popular in Pacific Northwest located on highway 101. In 1846, a cannon from the US Navy schooner Shark washed ashore just north of Arch Cape, a few miles to the south of Elk Creek, the current Cannon Beach. The schooner was wrecked while attempting to cross the Columbia Bar, also known as the “Graveyard of the Pacific” because of the danger of the bar. The beach was renamed “Cannon Beach.”

Breath-taking colors. I love the history you provided too. Who knew Oregon could be so beautiful?
Mark Goff replied
Thanks! I appreciate your comment on the history of the shot location. this is a habit I’ve got into the last couple of years to give the work some additional context. Part of the joy for me in this work is traveling to the places where the shots are taken, so I try to find out as much as possible about the locations.

This is gorgeous.
I’d love to go there. <3>
Mark Goff replied
Thank you. You should go there :-). Actually the Oregon and Washington coast both offer fantastic sites like this one. A quintensential american journey is to travel HWY 101 from california up to Washington or vice versa.

Timing, luck…talent to know…perfect!!
Mark Goff replied
Thanks Richard. The great thing about this location is that its so rich it doesn’t take that much talent or luck to capture a great image, but thank you for the nice comments.
Luka Skracic
Fantastic shot Mark, the long exposure meeting the stillness of the rocks is just great.
Mark Goff replied
Thanks Luka. More often that not I gravitate toward long exposures as it creates an affect the eye does not see in nature and is unique to the art of photography. I love this because the results are not always predictable.
