The Sword In The Stone

Great Merlin shouted loud and clear
“Pray hear my words” to one and all
“For in the woods there does exist
A stone upon which sun doth fall”

“Embedded in this stone a sword
I know not who has put it there
But promised is the English crown
To anyone who might so dare”

“To free the sword from whence it rests
And hold it boldly to the sky
For he shall be our rightful king
A right no mortal shall deny”

They came from far across the realm
The knights, the knaves, the poor, the great
They milled and jostled for a place
As one by one they tempted fate

The sword however held steadfast
As if no victor would be found
“This boy has yet to take his turn”
Did Merlin shout within the crowd

“Now hurry boy !, ’tis time to try”
Embarrassed, Arthur stood alone
He grasped the sword within his hands
And drew it smoothly from the stone

As one the crowd fell to their knees
“God save the king !!“, a shout arose
Young Arthurs journey had begun
Brittania found her sweet repose

Artist's Description

Inspired by the excellent work of Sarah Moore and her image The Sword In The Stone

I often write in an archaic voice as I enjoy the flow of the words. On being amazed by the Mists of Avalon series of images, I decided to write this piece.
