Shattered Dreams

Queen Guinevere lay in the snow
Her heart awash in aching pain
She watched her Lancelot depart
She wept and called his name in vain

And for his part Sir Lancelot
Trudged step by step through knee-deep snow
As tears of anguish filled his eyes
He knew this day he had to go

On hearing Guineveres despair
He stopped and wished he could return
A blackness overcame his heart
His reddened eyes did sting and burn

He looked upon his distant love
She raised a dagger in the air
Intent to drive it through her heart
But fell instead in great despair

His arms and legs did tremble weak
Her regal manner was destroyed
The thought of what he’d done to her
Did cause his gut to wretch and void

“Can you not see poor wretched soul
I have the devil in my heart
I have betrayed you and my King
And torn great Camelot apart”

With this he turned and travelled on
And shook his head with disbelief
What started as a loving tryst
Had brought them guilt and endless grief

Artist's Description

Inspired by the excellent work of Sarah Moore and her image Shattered Dreams

I often write in an archaic voice as I enjoy the flow of the words. On being amazed by the Mists of Avalon series of images, I decided to write this piece.
